Beginner’s Clothing Alterations – How to Alter Clothes to Fit
WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?
This class is aimed at those who wish to gain the skills to alter, refit or customise their clothing. It would be useful for people who have lost a lost or gained weight, those who want to adapt garments to their personal shape and size or to refit or repair a vintage or charity shop item.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
A great way to save money and prolong the life of your clothing, this class will give you all the basic skills to alter or repair your clothes. The first part of the session will consist of demonstrations of how to carry out general alterations such as taking in and out, shortening and lengthening a variety of garments you will then be able to carry out these alterations on garments of your own.
The class will include:
Lengthening and shortening
- Hems on Skirts, Trousers, Dresses, Tops etc.
- Jeans hem [making a French hem]
Taking in and Out
- Waistbands and facings and waist darts on skirts and trousers
- Straightening and tapering
- Adding darts
- Shirts and tops
- Trouser legs
- Replacing zips
HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE DO I ALREADY NEED?
This depends on the type of alterations you want to undertake. You do need to have good basic sewing skills. It’s ideal for those who have completed one of our Learn to Sew classs.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
You can bring up to 4 garments with you to work on. You should be able to complete alterations on at least 2 items depending on the difficultly of the alteration and your level of skills.
WHAT CLASS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND AFTER THIS ONE?
You may want to repeat this class to carry out further alterations or to perfect your finish you could take Couture Sewing Techniques – Stage 1 class.
