STAGE 1

Sewing Techniques

The Sewing Machine - Lock stitch machine and Overlock machine. Needles, thread, stitch type and size, tension, speed. Winding the bobbin. Threading the machine. Straight stitch, zig zag. Seams –Open, closed seam, French seam. Top stitch, edge stitch. Sewing curves and corners. Facings, flat stitch. Gathers. Darts. Plain dart and a contoured dart. Zips- Lapped zip, Concealed zip. Waistband. Elastic casings. Hems - Turned hem, Felled hem, Pin hem, Bound hem. Buttons and button holes.

Fabric Knowledge

Learn about different types of fabrics.Labelling and washing instructions. Learn how to select the right fabrics for your garments. Fusing, Interfacings and Linings. Grain lines, Bias cutting. Nap. Lay plans. How to lay pattern on fabric, mark and cut out. The preparation of cut pieces for construction order of construction. Pressing techniques.

Make a Skirt

Practice techniques learnt in Sewing Techniques by making a Skirt. Lay pattern on fabric mark and cut out, fuse. Finish raw seams, stay stitch. Attach a patch pocket. Sew zip, make seams, make darts, attach a waistband, hem and make a button hole, attach a button. Press and finish.

Make a Dress

Practice techniques learnt in Sewing Techniques by making a Dress. Sewing technique - Practice bagging out a lining. Practice setting in a sleeve. Lay pattern on fabric mark and cut out, fuse. Finish raw seams. Sew seams. Make princess line seams. Make tucks and gathers. Set in sleeves. Make and attach bodice lining. Insert a concealed zip, Make a felled hem. Press and finish.

STAGE 2

Make a Shirt

Sewing technique – Practice construction of a 2 piece collar – Practice construction of a cuff placket. Make a Shirt. Make seams, back pleat, double yoke, button wrap, 2 piece collar, sleeves, rocket placket opening, cuff, mark and make button holes attach buttons. Press and finish.

Make a Pair of Trousers

Sewing technique- Practice a sample of a Fly Zip Faster Construct fly fastener, create pleats, make hip pocket, sew yoke, seams, top stitch, make and attach belt loops, make and attach waistband, hem, make turn ups, make button holes attach buttons. Press and finish.

STAGE 3

Make a Lined Jacket

Jacket Construction - Sew Seams, construct darts, make jet pocket with flap, make a revere collar, attach a facing, and set in sleeves, make and attach lining, finish hem, make button holes attach button. Press and finish.

You will need to have previous sewing skills and to have made at least 3 garments or have completed our Stage 1 and 2 Pattern Cutting courses before joining this course.

All bookings must be made and paid for a minimum of 3 days in advance of the start date. If you wish to join a class less than 3 days before the start please contact us first. To join a course please book and pay via the website where you can pay with PayPal. If you are unhappy using PayPal, please contact us for an alternative payment option.

All fees are non refundable but if you are unable to attend a class you may send a friend along in your place or we will endeavour to transfer your booking to another date subject to availability.

If a class has to be cancelled or postponed  due to unavoidable circumstances or if a class is under-subscribed we will always try to give 48 hours notice  and you will be offered an alternative date, or a credit for the same amount of money (valid for 1 year) or a full refund.  We will not be liable for any other costs or expenses that you may incur.

Courses are taught from our studio at Unit F 23 Heneage Street, London E15LJ which is just off Brick Lane.The nearest stations are Liverpool Street and Algate East. View Map
