Professional Pattern Cutting Courses

If you wish to gain fashion expertise and are looking for more than our regular short courses then our Professional Skills courses are for you. These courses will provide you with all you need to become an expert in a particular subject, develop career opportunities, become freelance or set up a fashion business. Our courses are designed to offer a step by step progression route towards attaining a high level of skills in a range of subjects.

Places are strictly limited with maximum numbers between 6 and 10 students. Tuition takes place in small groups to ensure each student gets one to one guidance and the best possible understanding of the subject. Feedback and assessment will be given at the end of each course, and for each person who completes a course we offer a certificate of attendance as a record of their achievement.

These courses will run 3 times a year: January to March, April to June, September  to December. Each topic will also run as 1 week fulltime courses during our Summer School, from July – August.

Professional Pattern Cutting Skills - The Skirt Block - Stage 1

The Skirt - The Skirt Block:  Full scale and quarter scale. Add Flare. Darts. Move the darts. Turn darts into seams. Panel skirt. Pleats - Knife pleat, Box pleats, Inverted pleat. Gathers, Frills and Flounce. Yokes. Facings. Waistbands.

Pattern Draft:  Draft a full scale pattern for a Skirt of your own design to include seam allowances, annotations and all pattern markings.

Professional Pattern Cutting Skills - The Bodice Block - Stage 2

The Bodice - The Bodice Block: Full scale and quarter scale Darts and dart manipulation. Moving darts into seams, Wing seam, Princess line seam, Empire line seam. Necklines. Armholes. Facings. Yokes. Adding fullness. Openings and fastenings - Button wrap, Placket.

Dress - The Dress Block: Using the bodice and skirt blocks create a dress block. Contour Dart.

Collars: Flat collar, Stand collar, 2 piece collar.

Sleeves: One piece sleeve, Set in sleeve, Sleeve adaptations.

Pattern Draft: Draft a pattern for a simple top to include a yoke, a collar, a button wrap to include seam allowances, annotations and all pattern markings.

You will need to have completes a Stages 1 of our Pattern Cutting Skills Training programme or to have previous pattern cutting skills to complete this workshop.

Professional Pattern Cutting Skills - The Shirt - Stage 3

Would you like to be able to design, cut and make your own shirts?

You can take this course on its own or as part of our Garment Construction Skills course. Its also part of our Shirt making programme that consists of Make a Simple Shirt and Professional Shirt Making Skills and If you also want to design and make your own shirt patterns rather than use a commercial pattern we have a basic Pattern Cutting for Shirts course. They will take you through all the stages to understand the basics of cutting and construction of classic men’s or women’s shirt. On completion of the courses you should then be confident to use the skills learnt to go on to design, cut and make your own shirt styles.

The Shirt: You will be given a basic Shirt Block to copy. Using the block you will learn basic grading techniques. You will draft a yoke, a button wrap, a 1 piece and a 2 piece collar, a cuff and a placket opening. You will then produce a shirt pattern with all seam allowances and pattern annotations added.

You will need to have previous pattern cutting experience to complete this course.

Professional Pattern Cutting Skills - The Trouser Block - Stage 4

Trousers - The Trouser Block: Draft a standard size 12 Trouser Block . Create a number of trouser styles including ,Hipsters, Flared, Wide leg, Tapered, Peg top. Draft a Yoke, Hip pocket, Waistband. Belt loops, Fly zip fastner and create Turn-ups.

Pattern Draft: Draft a pattern for a pair of Trousers to include a fly faster, a yoke, waistband, pockets to include seam allowances, annotations and all pattern marking.

You will need to have previous pattern cutting experience to complete this course.

Professional Pattern Cutting Skills - The Jacket - Stage 5

Either using the bodice block created in a previous course or copying a block we have provided for you, you will learn how to draft a block for a lined jacket.

The workshop will cover how to create a Revere collar a Jet and a Welt pocket, a Facing and a Lining.

You will need to have completed one of our Bodice courses or have previous Patter Cutting experience as well as intermediate sewing skills to enrol on this course.

Intermediate Pattern Cutting - Pattern Grading Workshop

The purpose of grading is to proportionally increase or decrease the size of a pattern, while maintaining shape, fit, balance, and scale of style details. To properly fit a pattern to a range of sizes, each pattern piece needed to be graded, or systematically increased or decreased. Using a standard size 12 bodice front, back and sleeve you will learn to grade it up for larger sizes and grade it down for smaller sizes to create a set of sizes .

You will need to have completed the Bodice or Skirt Introductory course or workshop or have previous beginner’s level pattern cutting skills to enrol on this course.

1 Week Intensive Professional Pattern Cutting Skills - Stage 1 and 2

Please note: Stage 3 The Shirt, Stage 4 The Trouser and Stage 5 The Jacket can be taken as a 1 week Intensive course in August and also be taken as week end courses at points throughout the year.

Stage 1

Pattern Cutting tools and equipment. Pattern markings and annotations, seam allowances, notches etc. Lay plan, grain lines. How to take Body Measurements and how they relate to the block.

The Skirt Block - Full scale and quarter scale. Add Flare Darts manipulation. T urn darts into seams. Skirt Styles - Panel, Flare, Pleats, Gathers, Frills and Flounce etc. Yoke, Facing, Waistbands.

Stage 2

The Bodice Block - Full scale and quarter scale. Darts and dart manipulation Moving darts into seams, Wing seam, Princess line seam, Empire line seam. Necklines, Armholes, Facings Adding fullness Button wrap

Collars - Basic Collars – Mandarin collar, Peter Pan collar, Roll collar

Sleeves – Basic 1 piece sleeve

Pattern Draft - Draft a full scale pattern for a Skirt or Blouse of your own design to include seam allowances, annotations and all pattern markings.

1 Week Intensive Professional Pattern Cutting Skills - Stage 3 and 4

Stage 3
The Shirt

You will draft a Shirt Block. You will learn how to draft a yoke, add pleat, a button wrap, a 1 piece and a 2 piece collar, a cuff and a placket opening.

Pattern Draft - Draft a pattern for a Shirt with all seam allowances and pattern annotations added.

Stage 4
The Trouser Block

You will draft a Trouser Block and learn pattern manipulations to create a variety of trouser styles including: Flared, Tapered, Hipsters, Peg top

You will learn how to draft a Fly zip Fastner, Yoke, Pockets, a Waistbands, Belt loops and Turn ups

Pattern Draft - Draft a pattern for a pair of Trousers to include a fly faster, a yoke, waistband, pockets. Include seam allowances, all pattern markings and instructions.

1 Week Intensive Men's Wear Pattern Cutting - Stage 1 and 2 - The Shirt And The Trouser
