Pattern Cutting Courses

Pattern Cutting – Although Pattern Cutting is an Industry skill many people want to learn the process so that they can design and cut their own clothes for personal style and fit. These workshops and courses aimed at beginners will show you how to create garment blocks and how to develop the blocks to create details, styles and design features.
You should be able to sew and have made at least 2 garments to join a Pattern Cutting course. For those wishing to go further and gain Industry Level skills there is our Pattern Cutting Skills Training programme.
Introduction to Women’s wear Pattern Cutting
Gain a good understanding of the Pattern Making process to enable you to cut patterns and make garments to your own design. On this course you will learn about body measurements and how they relate to the production of basic pattern blocks. It will cover the pattern cutting process, pattern markings, grain lines and seam allowances and you will draft size 12 skirt and bodice blocks. You will then learn a variety of pattern cutting techniques such as dart manipulation, turning darts into seams, yokes, waistbands, facings, how to add fit and flare, how to create a button wrap, change necklines and armholes and create simple collar styles.. You can then create a pattern for a simple garment of your own design.
Introduction To Women's Wear Pattern Cutting - Create A Skirt Block

This course will introduce you to the basic skirt block and the pattern making process. You will learn how to take accurate body measurements and how they relate to the creation of basics blocks. You will then draft a block to either your own measurements or a standard size 12. The course will also cover seam allowances, pattern markings and terminology. You can then cut and sew the block in calico and learn how to fit and adapt the pattern accordingly. On the second day you will learn some simple pattern manipulations.
Introduction To Women's Wear Pattern Cutting - Create A Bodice Block

This course will introduce you to the basic bodice block and the pattern making process. You will learn how to take accurate body measurements and how they relate to the creation of basics blocks. You will then draft a block to either your own measurements or a standard size 12. The course will also cover seam allowances, pattern markings and terminology. You can then cut and sew the block in calico and learn how to fit and adapt the pattern accordingly. On the second day you will learn some simple pattern manipulations.
Pattern Cutting - Trouser Workshop
In this course you will copy a trouser block to a standard size 12. You will then learn how to create a a variety of trouser silhouettes such as tapered, flared, straight leg, and create a fly fastner, a yoke, pockets and a waistband. You will then draft a simple trouser pattern with seam allowances and pattern markings.
You will need to have completed the Bodice or Skirt Introductory course or workshop or have previous beginner’s level pattern cutting skills to enrol on this course.
Intermediate Pattern Cutting - Jacket Workshop
Either using the bodice block created in a previous course or copying a block we have provided for you, you will learn how to draft a block for a lined jacket. The workshop will cover how to create a Revere collar a Jet and a Welt pocket, a Facing and a Lining.
You will need to have completed one of our Bodice courses or have previous Patter Cutting experience as well as intermediate sewing skills to enrol on this course.
Intermediate Pattern Cutting - Pattern Grading Workshop
The purpose of grading is to proportionally increase or decrease the size of a pattern, while maintaining shape, fit, balance, and scale of style details. To properly fit a pattern to a range of sizes, each pattern piece needed to be graded, or systematically increased or decreased. Using a standard size 12 bodice front, back and sleeve you will learn to grade it up for larger sizes and grade it down for smaller sizes to create a set of sizes .
You will need to have completed the Bodice or Skirt Introductory course or workshop or have previous beginner’s level pattern cutting skills to enrol on this course.
